Rossa Di Napoli Eggplant - Organic

Rossa Di Napoli Eggplant - Organic

Solanum aethiopicum
(65 days) Open-pollinated. A favorite across the Mediterranean and India. Rossa Di Napoli is a different species than other eggplants we carry; it’s sometimes called Ethiopian Eggplant or Garden Egg. Ornamental plants have serrated leaves and are loaded with shiny fruits the size of tennis balls. Fruits mature to orange but are sweetest when they first turn from green to white. The flavor is similar to S. melongana eggplants but slightly sweeter and more delicate. We love them simmered in curries or slowly cooked down into a spread. Take care not to cook them at temperatures above 300°, as too much heat will bring out an unpleasant bitter flavor. We recommend staking plants because the fruits are so abundant! BACK!

Additional Information

Eggplant

  • 200-300 seeds/g.
  • Days to maturity are from transplant date.

Culture: Growing eggplant can be a challenge in the north. Start indoors in early spring. Minimum germination temperature is 60°, optimal range 75–90°. Transplant after all danger of frost. They resent wind, will not set fruit in cold or very hot temperatures or in drought. We recommend irrigation and using row covers and IRT mulch. Our selections are the most reliable producers we’ve found, yet some seasons even our skilled trialers get only sparse production of ripe fruits.

Colorado Potato Beetle (CPB)
Cultural controls: Rotation, control solanaceous weeds such as horse nettle, rapid flaming, suction devices, hand-picking if beetle pressure is low, mulch before adults arrive.
Material controls: Surround, Spinosad
